It will also have full specification for each piece, which will state that the pearls are genuine cultured pearls, what type of pearl you have chosen, and details about the components. | Freshwater PearlsA stunning array of sizes shapes and colours can be found within the category of the Fresh Water pearl. Derived from a living mollusc living and growing in areas of fresh water, such as streams, lakes and rivers from around the world. Healthy creatures flourish in healthy water producing the best pearls, with thick skin (nacre) depth of tone and high lustre. The size of a fresh water pearl will usually reflect the amount of time it is actually in the water, the longer period of time, the larger the pearl. Each type of pearl has it's normal parameters, fresh water pearls can be from a tiny 2mm seed pearl size up to around 14mm, some can be even larger but perhaps not quite retaining such a good or desired shape. Fresh water pearls are nucleated with a small piece of shell mantle tissue which disappears during the growing process, leaving a solid pearl of nacre.
Saltwater pearlsThe lustre of our Saltwater Akoya Oyster pearls and Fresh water pearls are of paramount importance to us at Pearls of Purity, for the simple reason that in our opinion this is where the inner life of the pearl is. Over the years our customers have told us that this is one of the most wonderful parts of owning real pearls. This kind of lustre can also be a major contributory factor to enhancing the skin tone and of course owning pearls that get noticed !. Due to the nucleation of saltwater oysters in stringent laboritory conditions with a tiny perfectly round bead, means that the organic layers of carbon building up over a period of years like the layers of an onion are also perfectly round and produce a refraction of light bouncing off a smooth surface giving a shine and luminosity. Chalky, matt or milky pearls are unable to produce this light reflection or shine. The more care and attention given to the healthy living environment during the growth of the pearl whilst in the water, will produce the more beautiful and lustrous pearl. Saltwater oyster pearls are recognised as the most highly prized and traditional grade for high end pearl jewellery. |
| Tahitian PearlsTahitian and south sea pearls are much larger than the freshwater and Akoya oyster pearls, starting around 8mm up to perhaps 20mm and occasionally larger as they derive from a much larger shell. (see glossary) the longer the pearl is cared for in healthy water conditions the larger the investment for the pearl farmer, the more vulnerable the pearl is to weather conditions and water mineral imbalances, and also more likely to grow into an undesirble shape which can detract from it's value. So for many reasons the larger the pearl that has kept the good desired shape, the more valuable it becomes. There are many new and vibrant colour treatments now available which can produce some gorgeous results but, there is only one true black pearl which is the Tahitian or south sea pearl. |
