GLOSSARY

Below is assistance with some of the terminology used in this website

AKOYA PEARLS
Saltwater pearls are harvested from the ocean and cultured within the Pinctada Fucata or P. imbricate, P. martensii and P. Radiate shells, nucleated with a mother of pearl bead or implant that ensures the pearl is perfectly round. This pearl has been the mainstay of the oyster or saltwater pearl industry in Japan, particularly as Kokichi Mikimoto was accredited with successfully pioneering the culturing process at the turn of century, Pearls of Purity's oyster pearls primarily come from Japan, but the Akoya oyster can also be found in China and in smaller quantities in other part of the world.

FRESH WATER PEARLS
Cultivated in fresh water, lakes, streams, sometimes referred to as sweet water or soft water pearls. A very wide selection of shapes, colours and sizes from tiny seed pearls to large 20mm in size. The host is a mollusk which can be multi nucleated producing several pearls per shell. Pearls of Purity's freshwater pearls primarily come from China, but they can be found in other areas of the world also.

CULTURED PEARLS
Pearls which are by the reaction of nucleus, bead or a foreign body inserted into the tissue, inducing a secretion called nacre, which covers the nucleus or foreign body to form a pearl.

PEARL HEALTH
The health of the Oyster is of paramount importance as the pearl itself is the product of the oysters Healthy immune system, which deals with the smoothing over of the nucleus by its secretion creating layers and layers of calcium carbonate to produce a beautiful pearl. Outside factors also need assistance in the welfare of the oyster such as temperature, bacterial prevention, cleaning of the shells, water chemical balance, weather and environment

NACRE
Is the substance secreted by oysters and molluscs as a result of a foreign body, sand, piece of rock, even a parasite, or in culturing processes the nucleus. The nacre itself forms layers of calcium carbonate in a crystalline format along with a bonding substance called conchiolin which is an organic protein.

MOTHER OF PEARL
The secretion made by the oyster or mollusc to line the inside of the shell, (can also be called Nacre) This mother of pearl can be used as the nucleus for the creation of pearls, where the shell is cut into pieces and shaped into perfect little round beads which are then inserted into the tissue of the oyster or mollusc to produce the nucleus.

PEARL SIZE GUIDANCE & MEASURING FOR THE PERFECT FIT

The image illustrated here is an indicator for your guidance of pearl sizing for the cultured pearl strands. The top row is of 5mm in size through to the bottom row of 8mm pearls, the illustration is of unknotted strands (without the silk hand knotted between each pearl) for guidance only, as our traditionally hand strung rows of pearls are knotted between each pearl for security unless requested otherwise.

Freshwater pearls have a wider size choice, starting with seed pearls of 2mm through to 12mm for semi round and beyond for pearls of different shapes. Tahitian and South Sea pearls can be very much larger in fact up to 20mm.

The length of a strand of pearls can sometimes be called by a particular name, for example the Opera length, or Princess length, these are just two of the many names that have been given to necklaces over the years. At Pearls of Purity, we prefer to be guided by your own particular chosen length in inches or cms to be accurate, which is the overall and total length including the clasp, in other words the finished length. We will be happy to custom any length that you wish.

To help you achieve the very best fit, It is worth pointing out a few helpful tips:-

The larger the pearl the further the pearls sit away from the skin, so it is a adviseable to consider just a little extra length for the larger size pearls, perhaps up to an extra inch.

If you are measuring for a multi row necklace then the top or the shortest row is the length to be guided by, the other rows will be adjusted accordingly to ensure a perfect fit and space for them to lay on the neck comfortably.

If you are measuring for a multi row bracelet, although the rows are all uniformed at the same length, a little extra length perhaps 1/2" is needed to ensure a finger can get behind the clasp for ease of securing the clasp. This is only a consideration when measuring for more than one row of pearls.

PEARL GRADING & CARE

PEARL GRADING & CARE

At Pearls of Purity we would like to reassure you that our grading has strict descriptions for each piece. beginning with higher Grades through to the Pearls of Purity GOLD TAG grade, which will be explained individually within the shop. We know that sometimes the internet does not provide all the answers or that it can not always produce a clear enough picture for you to make a decision, this is why the following facts are particularly important.

(1) The quality grade of your purchase will always meet or surpass all descriptions and grading given by Pearls of Purity Ltd with the utmost integrity.

(2) If for any reason you are unhappy with your purchase we uphold a 14 day money back guarantee (for more details see guarantee section)

(3) If you need any assistance with regard to sizing, lengths, pictures, colour matching, customising or indeed anything at all, please dont hesitate to contact us or email your questions.

As there is not a recognised universal pearl grading system, this means that different countries and different pearl types have different grading systems, for example........ Amerca widely uses the A - AAA, system, AAA being the highest or gem quality grade, but sometimes you will see a "+" or even "AAAA" for an additional and subjective view point as to the quality grade, you could say it is a personal interpretation. Some Pearl dealers particularly for Freshwater Pearls use the A,B,C,D system and then adding a plus or minus sign to indicate a slightly higher or lower level within the grade, for example A+ then A, B+ then B, C+ etc., A, being the highest grade. The Tahitian and South Sea Pearl grading system, which the French Polynesian government standards are based on use A, B, C, D. Each grading system deals with the percentage of the pearls surface which is unflawed, the level of lustre, the shape, colour, overtone colours, uniformatiy and so on.....

Our business is well established and in an unusual and specialised field, providing the Jewellery Industry and retail buyers with high quality pearls, both cultured Akoya oyster and Tahitian pearls also a stunning array of Freshwater cultured Pearls, all of which are strung on to the best quality pure silks in the traditional manner for safety, wearability and beauty.

CARING FOR YOUR PEARLS
(A card will be enclosed with every purchase for keepsake and reference)

Caring for your pearls will give you life long pleasure, here are some tips:-

Probably the most important is to protect them from perfume and sprays.
Wipe them with a dry pure silk cloth every now and again.
NEVER wash the strand, our pearls are threaded on high quality multi strands of silk, this will stretch and weaken the strand if wet.
Wrap them in silk when not wearing.
Have them regularly professionally re-strung.
