AKOYA PEARLS
Saltwater pearls are harvested from the ocean and cultured within the Pinctada Fucata or P. imbricate, P. martensii and P. Radiate shells, nucleated with a mother of pearl bead or implant that ensures the pearl is perfectly round. This pearl has been the mainstay of the oyster or saltwater pearl industry in Japan, particularly as Kokichi Mikimoto was accredited with successfully pioneering the culturing process at the turn of century, Pearls of Purity's oyster or saltwater pearls come from Japan and China, but the Akoya oyster pearl can also be found in smaller quantities in other parts of the world too. In the UK this has been recognised for generations as the traditional classical heirloom pearl, that which you would expect to see on Royalty.
FRESH WATER PEARLS
Cultivated in fresh water, lakes, streams, sometimes referred to as sweet water or soft water pearls. A very wide selection of shapes, colours and sizes from tiny seed pearls to large 20mm in size. The host is a mollusk which can be multi nucleated producing several pearls per shell. The small peice of tissue which is inserted into the mollusc dissapears during the growing process leaving the pearl completely solid Nacre so there is no problem with thickness of the nacre to ensure it's longevity. Pearls of Purity's freshwater pearls primarily come from China, but they can be found in other areas of the world also. The quality grades and choice of this pearl is growing all the time.
CULTURED PEARLS
Pearls which are by the reaction of nucleus, bead or a foreign body inserted into the tissue, inducing a secretion called nacre, which covers the nucleus or foreign body to form a pearl.
PEARL HEALTH
The health of the Oyster is of paramount importance as the pearl itself is the product of the oysters Healthy immune system, which deals with the smoothing over of the nucleus by its secretion creating layers and layers of calcium carbonate to produce a beautiful pearl. Outside factors also need assistance in the welfare of the oyster such as temperature, bacterial prevention, cleaning of the shells, water chemical balance, weather and environment
NACRE
Is the substance secreted by oysters and molluscs as a result of a foreign body, sand, piece of rock, even a parasite, or in culturing processes the nucleus. The nacre itself forms layers of calcium carbonate in a crystalline format along with a bonding substance called conchiolin which is an organic protein.
MOTHER OF PEARL
The secretion made by the oyster or mollusc to line the inside of the shell, (can also be called Nacre) This mother of pearl can be used as the nucleus for the creation of pearls, where the shell is cut into pieces and shaped into perfect little round beads which are then inserted into the tissue of the oyster or mollusc to produce the nucleus.
BIWA PEARLS
This often refers to the shape of the pearl, we also call this a stick pearl, some have beautiful high lustre and varied colours, but actually it originated from the place in which the pearls were cultivated, Lake Biwa in Japan.
BAROQUE PEARLS
This is a name used for irregular shaped pearls, they can be all different from eachother on one strand but should be complimentary to eachother, ideal for individual unique peices and can have a beautiful result as a pendant or an "almost" matching pair of earrings. The surface will be uneven, some can be flat on one side making them ideal for jewellery designers.
KESHI PEARLS
A bi-product of the culturing system, whereby small splinters of the host shell get inside and the mollusc coats them with Nacre which produces lots of small irregular shaped pearls, highly lustrous and unique.
TOOTH TEST
One of the best methods of testing whether a pearl is real, it's not totally fool proof or hygenic, but it remains a good indicator, there are some expensive fake or faux pearls made from glass, ceramic, pastes, crushed shell which is reconstituted and formed into very large and inexpensive fake pearls, also fake pearls made from fish scales and over the years have become difficult to spot to an untrained eye. Gently rub the pearls against the edge of your top front teeth, if they feel very smooth they are probably fake, if they feel gritty, they are "probably" the real thing.

As I already have a pearl necklace with a black Tahitian pearl (bought in one of Tahiti's islands) on an enhancer, i wanted to buy a pearl bracelet to wear at the same time. It was my birthday and our son is getting married so what better opportunity to buy something which will last forever to give me even more memories.
I came across quite a few web sites but none of them looked as good as Pearls of Purity. So, I gave them a call and spoke to a lovely lady called Carol, who told me all about the company and when I said I was going to look in some jewellers also that day regardless, she actually told me that i should without hesitation. She obviously was convinced that their pearls were of better quality and value than any that you could buy on the hgih street.
How right she was, the shops we looked in whilst in Cambridge were way overpriced and the quality was definatly inferior. I then had no qualms about ordering from Carol on the Monday morning. The pearls arrived Wednesday morning ( not in so had I pick them up from the post office) and i can catagorically say without doubt that I was over the moon at my pearl bracelet. The pearl necklace arrived safely this morning and it is absolutely stunning.
